The north's second-largest town and an important transport hub, LAMPANG , 100km southeast of Chiang Mai, is best used as a base for visiting the Elephant Conservation Centre, 37km away, as there's little of interest in the town beside the imposing Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao on Thanon Phra Kaeo. If you have a motorbike you might also want to head 15km southwest to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang , a grand and well-preserved capsule of beautiful Lanna art and architecture.
