A jaunt up DOI SUTHEP , the mountain which rises steeply at Chiang Mai's western edge, is the most satisfying outing you can make from the city, chiefly on account of beautiful Wat Phra That Doi Suthep , which dominates the hillside, and, because of a magic relic enshrined in its chedi, is the north's holiest shrine. It is approached by a flight of three hundred steps (or B10 funicular) which leads to the upper terrace, a breathtaking combination of carved wood, filigree and gleaming metal, whose altars and ceremonial umbrellas surround the dazzling gold-plated chedi. Frequent songthaews leave the corner of Manee Noparat and Chotana roads for the sixteen-kilometre trip up the mountain (B30 to the wat). The road, although steep in places, is paved all the way and well suited for motorbikes.
