Several routes lead from Chiang Saen to CHIANG KHONG , 70km downriver. A peaceful one-street town, Chiang Khong is the only other land border with Laos , aside from Nong Khai, where you can turn up and get your Lao visa. The most scenic way to get from Chiang Saen to Chiang Khong is by motorbike; an exciting alternative is to run the rapids on a hired longtail boat (B1200; 3hr). There are two daily buses and several morning-only songthaews (2hr). Frequent buses also ply the route to and from Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. Chiang Khong's best guesthouse is Ban Tam-Mi-La, at 113 Thanon Sai Klang (tel 053/791234; under $5), down a lane immediately in front of Ann Tour, and has tasteful wooden bungalows, a good restaurant, and bike rental. Orchid Garden Guesthouse (tel 053/655195; under $5) is a teakwood house with plain rooms in a quiet local soi running 100m west of the main road from Ann Tour. The best European/Thai food is served at nearby Enjoy Rimkhong. Opposite Ann Tour, Tawan Tours offers Internet access (10am-10pm).
