The small market town of TRAT is the perfect place to stock up on essentials and change money before heading out to Ko Chang, via the port at Laem Ngop . Buses from Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal drop passengers on the main Thanon Sukhumvit, 100m north of the songthaew stop for Laem Ngop and Ko Chang boats. There are also buses to and from Ban Phe and Pattaya. The long-running Foremost Guesthouse (tel 039/511923; under $5) is a short walk southeast of the bus stop, at 49 Thanon Thoncharoen. Rooms are basic, but there's a communal area downstairs which has a very useful set of travellers' comment books, including info on travel across the Cambodian border. Around the corner at 12 Soi Yai Onn, NP Guesthouse (tel 039/512270; under $5) has nice enough rooms and a B50 dorm, or try the nearby, friendly Cocos Guest House (under $5), another good source of information on surrounding islands and border formalities. The more centrally located Muang Trat Hotel (tel 039/511091; $10-20), on the edge of the night market, offers comfortable and clean rooms. The best places to eat in Trat are at the day market, on the ground floor of the Thanon Sukhumvit shopping centre, and the night market, between Soi Vichidanya and Soi Kasemsan, east of Thanon Sukhumvit.
