Since 1998, foreigners have been able to cross the border into Cambodia from BAN HAT LEK , 91km east of Trat. However, it's worth reading the travellers' comment books at Foremost Guesthouse in Trat, as the crossing entails a long and complicated journey. The route basically involves taking a motorbike taxi (B20) and short ferry (B20) from Hat Lek to Krong Koh Kong (just across the Cambodian border), then a ferry to Sao Thong, and then a three-hour boat ride to Sihanoukville (Kompong Son). From here it's a
four-hour bus ride to Phnom Penh. Alternatively, you can catch a direct boat to Sihanoukville from Ko Kong but it leaves at 8am, meaning you need to leave Trat at 5am. You need a visa from the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok to cross at this point. The border opens from 7am to 5pm. Public songthaews to Khlong Yai, 74km east of Trat, leave Trat about every thirty minutes from behind the shopping centre; from Khlong Yai you'll have to charter the songthaew to continue on to Ban Hat Lek, about 17km away.
