TRANG (aka Taptieng) holds an eye-catching Vegetarian Festival every October , but is chiefly of interest for the string of gorgeous beaches and islands nearby. Most buses arrive at the terminal on Thanon Huay Yod, to the north of the centre; buses from Satun and Palian stop on Thanon Ratsada, which runs south from the eastern end of Thanon Rama VI. Air-con minibuses for Hat Yai have two bases, one at the petrol station on Thanon Phatthalung to the northeast of the centre, the other on Thanon Huay Yod, 200m south of the main bus terminal; those for Nakhon Si Thammarat are based on Thanon Klong Huai Yang, off Thanon Wisetkul about 200m from the clocktower; those for Ko Lanta and for Pak Bara are handled by Trang Tour . The train station is at the western end of Thanon Rama VI. The best budget hotel is the Ko Teng Hotel at 77-79 Thanon Rama VI (tel 075/218622; under $5), with large, clean en-suite rooms and a travellers' restaurant. Night markets set up in the station square, and around the clocktower on Wisetkul and Rama VI roads. Trang Tour travel agency , beside Thumrin Hotel on Thanon Rama VI (tel 075/214564), books boat trips to the nearby islands (B600) and three-day dive trips (B6500), and arranges rental of motorbikes (B180-250) and cars (B800; B1500 with driver).
