The seedy brothel town of SUNGAI KOLOK is at the end of the rail line from Bangkok, and right on the Malay border . The train station (tel 073/611162) is in the northern part of town, and from here you can walk or take a motorbike taxi or samlor to the border. From Rantau Panjang on the other side of the border, frequent taxis and buses head for Kota Bahru, 30km away . The budget hotel in Sungai Kolok is the Thanee, at 4/1 Thanon Cheunmanka (tel 073/611046; $5-10), five minutes' walk south from the train station down Thanon Charoenkhet. TAT has an office right beside the frontier checkpoint (daily 8.30am-4.30pm; tel 073/516144). For those arriving in Sungai Kolok from Malaysia, there are trains at noon and 3pm for the 23-hour trip to Bangkok via Hat Yai and Surat Thani. Air-conditioned minibuses to and from Hat Yai park opposite the station.
