Remote SATUN nestles in the last wedge of Thailand's west coast and is chiefly of interest for its boat services to Malaysia . Satun's bus depot is at the north end of town, but most buses also make a stop in the centre; share taxis and air-conditioned minibuses are centrally based around the junction of Thanon Saman Pradit, the main east-west thoroughfare, and Thanon Buriwanit. Rian Thong (tel 074/711036; under $5), by the town pier at 4 Thanon Saman Pradit, is the best budget hotel . The boats to Malaysia depart from Thammalang pier, 10km south of Satun and served by frequent songthaews (30min). In the morning, frequent longtails run to Kuala Perlis on Malaysia's northwest tip (30min; B40), from where there are plentiful transport connections down the west coast . Four ferry boats a day also cross from Thammalang pier to the Malaysian island of Langkawi (90min); buy tickets (B360 return) from Satun Travel and Ferry Service, opposite the Wangmai Hotel at 45/16 Thanon Satun Thani (tel 074/711453). Entering Thailand by sea from Malaysia, you need to get your passport stamped at the immigration office at Thammalang pier.
