The Burmese border is marked by the 1400-metre-high Three Pagodas Pass (Sam Phra Chedi Ong), 18km from Sangkhlaburi and easily reached by songthaew (every 40min; 40 min). All border trade for hundreds of kilometres has to come through here, and over the last half-century it has been fought over by several Burmese factions; it's currently controlled by the Burmese government. The pagodas themselves are tiny whitewashed stupas on the edge of Ban Sam Phra Chedi Ong, a small village comprising just a few food stalls, a wat and a tourist restaurant. Burmese land starts 50m away, at the village of Payathonzu. At the time of writing, foreign nationals were not allowed to cross the border here.
