Seventeen kilometres southeast of Lopburi along Highway 1 stands the most important pilgrimage site in central Thailand, Wat Phra Phutthabat , which is believed to house a footprint made by the Buddha when he travelled through Thailand. According to legend, a hunter discovered this foot-shaped trench in 1623 and was immediatly cured of his terrible skin disease. A temple was built on the spot, and a naga staircase leads up to the gaudy mondop which houses the five-foot long footprint. During the dry season in January, February and March, a million pilgrims from all over the country flock to the lively Phrabat Fair. Any of the frequent buses to Saraburi or Bangkok from Lopburi's Sakeo roundabout will get you there in thirty minutes. The souvenir village around the temple, on the western side of Highway 1, has plenty of food stalls.
