At Konyu, 18km beyond Nam Tok, seven separate cuttings were dug over a three-kilometre stretch. The longest and most brutal of these was Hellfire Pass, which got its name from the hellish lights of the fires the POWs used when working at night. Hellfire Pass has now been turned into a circular, ninety-minute memorial walk, which follows the old rail route through the eighteen-metre-deep cutting and on to Hin Tok creek along a course relaid with some of the original track. Most Kanchanaburi tour operators feature visits to Hellfire Pass, but you can also take any bus bound for Thong Pha Phum or Sangkhlaburi and ask to be dropped off at Hellfire Pass, which is signposted on the west side of Highway 323
