Set in a fine landscape of limestone hills 65km northwest of Nakhon Pathom, the peaceful riverside raft houses of KANCHANABURI make this a popular and very pleasant travellers' hangout. Aside from the town's main sights - the Bridge over the River Kwai and several moving memorials to the town's role in World War II - there are several caves, waterfalls and historical sites to explore. A commemorative son et lumiere River Kwai Bridge Festival is held here for ten days every November; it's very popular so you'll need to book accommodation and transport well ahead.
