Housed in a spectacular colonial-era mansion fronted by two black eagles, the Asian Civilization Museum (same times as Art Museum; tel 3323015), at 39 Armenian St, features ten permanent galleries which together provide a cultural and historical context to Singapore's Chinese population. After kicking off with a breakdown of the Middle Kingdom's various Imperial dynasties, the museum's galleries walk visitors through the architecture, religions, arts and crafts of the Chinese. There is much to be learnt here. The Symbolism Gallery, for instance, explains the bats, dragons and other auspicious motifs featured in Oriental art. There is also much of beauty - nowhere more so than in the Ceramics Gallery, which yields some exquisite cobalt-blue Ming pieces. Free guided tours of the museum start downstairs at the ticket counter (same times as Art Museum).
