The Singapore Zoological Gardens (daily 8.30am-6pm; S$10.30) on Mandai Lake Road is one of the world's few open zoos, where moats are preferred to cages. It manages to approximate the natural habitats of the animals it holds, and though leopards, pumas and jaguars still have to be kept behind bars, this is a thoughtful, humane place. There are over two thousand animals here, representing more than 240 species, so it's best to allow a whole day for your visit. A tram (S$2) circles the grounds on a one-way circuit. Highlights include the Komodo dragons, the polar bears (which you view underwater from a gallery) and the primate kingdom. Two animal shows are featured daily - a primate and reptile show (10.30am & 2.30pm) and an elephant and sea lion show (11.30am & 3.30pm). Kids tend to get most out of these shows, and Children's World offers them the chance to ride a camel, hold young chicks and see a milking demonstration; at 9am and 4pm daily they can even share a meal with an orang-utan . It's also possible to go on a Night Safari here (daily 7.30pm-midnight; S$15.45), which means you watch as over a hundred species of animals - among them elephants, rhinos, giraffes, leopards, hyenas, otters, and incredibly cute fishing cats - play out their nocturnal routines under a forest of standard lamps. Only five of the safari's eight zones are walkable - to see the rest you'll need to take a fifty-minute Jurassic Park-style tram ride (S$3). Buy the S$1 Guide to S'pore Zoo on arrival: besides riding and feeding times and a map, the booklet suggests itineraries which take in all the major shows and attractions. To get to the zoo, take bus #171 from either Stamford Road or Orchard Boulevard to Mandai Road, then transfer to #138. Alternatively, take the MRT to Ang Mo Kio and connect with the #138.
