Siquijor , nicknamed "Island of Fire", lying slightly apart from the rest of the Visayas off the southern tip of Cebu and about 22km east of Negros, is so called because of the number of fireflies Spanish sailors used to see as they approached at night. Very little is known about Siquijor and its inhabitants before the arrival of the Spaniards in the sixteenth century. This sense of mystery still persists today, with many Filipinos believing Siquijor to be a centre of witchcraft and black magic. It's a view that's enforced by the annual staging of the Conference of Sorcerers and Healers in the mountain village of San Antonio every Easter. You can circumnavigate Siquijor by bus and jeepney along the bumpy coastal road. SIQUIJOR TOWN , the capital, is twenty minutes by jeepney southwest of Larena, the main port. There are four daily hydrofoil links on Delta Fast Ferries between Dumaguete on Negros and Larena, making it possible to visit Siquijor for a day. Delta also has two journeys a day between Dumaguete and Siquijor Town. There are ferries every other day to and from Cebu, but it's a longer journey (7hr). The most popular beaches on Siquijor are Sandugan , half an hour by jeepney north of Larena, and Paliton on the west coast, which you can reach by jeepney from San Juan. There is plenty of nipa-type rustic beach accommodation in these areas. On Sandugan Beach try Casa de la Playa, Kiwi Dive Resort or Paradise Beach Resort, all offering doubles in the $5-15 range.
