Romblon

Romblon is off the northern coast of Panay, between Mindoro and Bicol, and consists of three main islands, Tablas, Romblon and Sibuyan. Romblon is largely overlooked by visitors, but is well worth the effort. The beaches are exceptional and many of the reefs are pristine, making Romblon an excellent off-the-beaten-track destination for scuba diving and snorkelling. Romblon is well-known in the Philippines for its marble, but less well known for anything else. The locals seem to like it that way. They fish, they farm and they maintain their quiet little corner of the archipelago in mint condition. Two of the finest white beaches are at Lugbung Island and Kobrador Island , off the west coast of Romblon town. Romblon town itself has Spanish forts, a cathedral built in 1726 and some breathtaking views across the Romblon Strait from Sabang Lighthouse.

There's not much in the way of smart accommodation , but south of Romblon town there are some pretty nipa huts for rent along the beaches. Marble beach has a couple of simple resorts. It's 12km south of Romblon town, a P30 tricycle ride. Getting to Romblon has become easier recently with the launching of an Asian Spirit flight to the airport at Tablas on Tablas Island. It departs Manila every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11.30am. From Tablas there are jeepneys to take you to San Agustin on the northeast coast where you can cross by local

banca to Romblon town. By ferry you can take the Salve Juliana from Manila to Romblon town every Sunday at 2pm (16hr). It leaves for the return journey every Friday at 3pm. The Romblon Bay leaves Manila for Romblon town every Tuesday at 3pm and Romblon for Manila every Wednesday at 8pm. A good way to fit Romblon into your highland-hopping schedule is to take the big outrigger boat that goes daily from Boracay at 7am to Looc on the southern tip of Tablas Island (2hr).
