Mount Kanlaon , two hours from Bacolod by jeepney, is the tallest peak in the central Philippines and offers a potentially dangerous challenge. Climbers have died scaling it, so don't underestimate its fury. It is still one of the thirteen most active volcanoes in the country and locals believe it is home to many spirits. The surrounding forest contains all manner of wonderful fauna, including pythons, monitor lizards, tube-nosed bats and the dahoy pulay, a poisonous green tree snake. There are a number of resorts in the area. It was here that President Manuel Quezon hid from invading Japanese forces during World War II. For up-to-date information about the safety of climbing Kanlaon and for details on accommodation nearby contact the City Tourism Office in Bacolod (tel 033/433 2515 or 433 2517).
