The island of Negros lies at the heart of the Visayas, between Panay to the west and Cebu to the east. Shaped like a boot, it is split diagonally into the northwestern province of Negros Occidental and the southeastern province of Negros Oriental. The demarcation came when early missionaries decided the central mountain range was too formidable to cross, even in the name of God. It's an island many tourists miss out and as a result is largely unspoilt: it has miles of untouched coastline, some pleasant towns - Dumaguete , the capital of Negros Oriental is one of the stateliest towns in the Philippines - and dormant volcanoes . Negros is also "Sugarlandia", producing fifty percent of the country's sugar . Around Bacolod , the capital of Negros Occidental, authentic 1912 steam locomotives and well-preserved Spanish ancestral homes serve as reminders of the rich sugar barons and Spanish families of the past.
