The small island of Guimaras lies a short ferry ride away from Iloilo City and is famous for its mangoes, which not only grow in profusion, but are said to be among the sweetest in the Philippines. It's more than just a day-trip destination. From the ferry pier in the capital, Jordan , you can catch a jeepney to the south side of the island around Cabalagnan and San Isidro , where there are some wonderful, quiet beaches (except at weekends, when the locals converge) and a handful of cheap nipa resorts. The spacious Raymen Beach Cottages ($5-10), in Alubihod, Nueva Valencia , on the island's southwest coast, are built on a perfect white-sand beach and have large balconies. There's no restaurant or menu, but the owners will make sure there's always a supply of fresh fish, which they will cook for you in their small kitchen and serve under the stars. More upmarket resorts include Nagarao Island Resort (tel 320 6290; $25-40), 22 native-style bungalows on the tiny island of Nagarao , off the southeast coast of Guimaras. Meals are available too, though cost extra. There are no other restaurants on Nagarao, so you are a captive audience. You can make bookings direct or at Nagarao Pension House in Iloilo (113 Seminario Street, Jaro). Several small ferries leave Iloilo daily for the short crossing to Jordan, starting at 5am. The best place to catch them is the wharf near the post office, although some also depart from Ortiz Wharf at the southern end of Ortiz Sreet near the market. Ferries arriving in Jordan are greeted by jeepneys serving the beaches on the south side of the island.
