Practicalities
There are two gateways to Boracay. The nearest airport is at Kalibo on the Panay mainland, served by Philippine Airlines and Air Philippines. From here air-con shuttles take passengers the two hours by road to Caticlan, where bancas wait to ferry passengers to Boracay (20min). The bancas will take you to White beach, from where you can walk to the resorts. There's also a small airstrip at Caticlan itself, served by daily Pacific Air and Asian Spirit flights from Manila. From Caticlan it's a five-minute tricycle ride and twenty-minute banca journey to White beach. WG&A Superferry has departures every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from Manila to Dumaguit in Aklan, from where you can travel by bus to Caticlan. The ferry continues on to Roxas. Negros Navigation also serves Dumaguit, with a weekly sailing from Manila on Tuesdays at 4pm. Buses from Kalibo's Ceres Bus Terminal take two hours to get to Caticlan and cost P100. From the Rizal Street terminal in Iloilo catch a Ceres Liner bus or air-conditioned van to Caticlan. There's a tourist information office (Mon-Sat 7am-8pm; tel 036/288 3869), halfway along White beach, where you can get maps, while just south of it, also on the beach, is the Boracay Tourist Centre (Mon-Sat 7am-8pm; tel 036/288 3704), where you can do everything from booking flights to arranging visas and making a long-distance telephone call. The boom in tourism on Boracay means Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted, although sometimes with a small surcharge. There's even a small branch of Allied Bank on the main road behind White Beach, where you can change travellers' cheques , although many resorts also act as de facto currency changers. The post office in Balabag, the small community halfway along White beach, is open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, and you can also post letters at Boracay Tourist Centre. The island has a hospital with basic facilities and half a dozen private clinics and pharmacies. A handful of Internet coffee shops have sprung up on the island, but connections are not always reliable. You can also try Netcom on the main road inland near Boat Station 1. The usual charge is P70 an hour or in some cases P1.50 a minute. There are dozens of small sari-sari stores on White beach selling beachwear, T-shirts and souvenirs, and there's a central market, called Talipapa, where you can buy fruit and fish. It's just north of Boat Station 3 behind White beach. The police have a small station between Boat Stations 2 and 3.
