In 1819, the Spanish friar Diego Cera created the world's only organ made from bamboo out of a simple desire to save money. It worked so well that it is still used today, and for a week in February becomes the focal point of the Las Pinas Bamboo Organ Festival , which brings together artists from around the world. The organ is in the San Jose Church (Mon-Fri 9-11am & 2-4pm; P10; tel 02/828 1856) in Las Pinas , a suburban area about an hour south of Manila depending on traffic. You can reach Las Pinas on buses from Taft Avenue bound for Zapote or Cavite. Ask the conductor to tell you when to get off. It's worth combining a trip to the bamboo organ with a tour of the nearby Sarao jeepney factory (tours Mon-Sat 8am-4pm; tel 02/828 1266), on Padre Diego Cerra Avenue, Palanglupa, Las Pinas, about 3km south of San Jose Church. Sarao was one of the first companies to take leftover World War II American jeeps and transmogrify them into the ubiquitous smoke-belching street-art vehicles of today. From San Jose Church it's best to take a jeepney bound for Alabang (20min; P15), from where dozens of buses and jeepneys run back down the South Luzon Expressway to Manila.
