Less than 30km northeast of Naga lies San Miguel Bay , which has a number of quiet beaches and islands worth exploring and a handful of resorts in the "functional" category. Some of the beaches in this area are as good as anything the Visayas has to offer, and are often deserted because few tourists make the trip. You can hire a banca locally and explore the islands. One of the nicest places to stay is the Swagman-owned resort ($15-40) on Apuao Grande Island, with its rustic cottages (up to four people) and white-sand beach; you can make reservations through any Swagman office (the Manila number is 02/523 8541-45) and they will also help with transport from Manila. You can get to San Miguel Bay through either Naga or Daet. The place to aim for is the fishing village of Mercedes , from where the islands are a 45-minute banca ride. Mercedes is 10km southeast of Daet and about 45 minutes by road northeast of Naga. Buses and jeepneys run intermittently from Pimentel Avenue in Daet and the main terminals in Naga.
