The province of Masbate lies in the centre of the archipelago, bounded in the north by the Bicol Peninsula, in the south by the Visayan Sea, in the west by the Sibuyan Sea, and in the east by the Samar Sea. It includes the main island of Masbate and a number of smaller islands, including the Burias Islands and the large island of Ticao , off the northeastern coast. Masbate is the Philippines' wild east. It ranks second only to Bukidnon in Mindanao in cattle production and plays host to a number of rodeos which are being touted by the local governnment as a new tourist attraction. Otherwise, Masbate is off the main tourist trail. There are some excellent beaches, including Dacu beach in Mobo town, a fifteen-minute jeepney ride from the capital MASBATE , on the northeast coast of Masbate Island. Talisay beach , famous for its rock formations, on Ticao Island, is 13km south of San Fernando or 30km from Masbate. Deagan Island was once famous for being the favourite hideaway of former First Lady Imelda Marcos. These beaches are favoured by the locals and have simple rustic accommodation. In Masbate itself, Saint Anthony Hotel (no phone; $5-10), on Quezon Street, is one of only a few options. Masbate airstrip is only a five-minute jeepney ride (P10) from Masbate City. Asian Spirit flies direct from Manila four times a week. Sulpicio Lines and WG&A both have ferry services from Manila leaving once or twice a week. Ferries also connect Masbate to Cebu and Leyte. Buses and jeepneys link Masbate City with other places on the island. They leave from the main square, opposite the Provincial Capitol Building.
