A journey through southern Palawan represents one of the last great travel challenges in the Philippines. This is country that has so far been almost untouched by tourism. Much of the area is sparsely populated, with limited accommodation and nothing in the way of dependable transport, communications or electricity. About the only noted tourist attraction in the southern half of Palawan are the Tabon Caves , 157km southwest of Puerto Princesa in Quezon. It's a five-hour trip by jeepney or bus from Puerto Princesa to Quezon Wharf, where you can hire a banca to take you to the caves. It was here that fossils and crude tools of ancient man dating some 22,000 years back were unearthed. A large quantity of Chinese pottery was also found, most of which was transferred to the National Museum in Manila for preservation. The main entrance to the caves, measuring 18m high and 16m wide, overlooks a beautiful bay studded with white sand beach islands. Of the two hundred caves in the Tabon Caves Complex, only seven are open to visitors. Continuing south down the west coast by bus or jeepney brings you to the village of Rizal , from where the road crosses the island west to east, bringing you to Batarza , one of the few places with recognized accommodation in the form of the Bonbon Lodging House ($10-15). The journey north brings you back to Puerto Princesa via Brooke's Point , a trading post, 25km from Mount Matalingahan, Palawan's highest peak at 2086m. Further north between Narra and Aborlan there are some quiet resorts on Tigman beach . From Aborlan it's 69km back to Puerto Princesa.
