Picturesque Honda Bay is 10km north of Puerto Princesa by road and makes a good day-trip, though you can also stay overnight. There are seven islands in the bay, and you can visit them all by hiring a boat from Santa Lourdes Wharf. Snake Island has a good reef for snorkelling and Starfish Island has a rustic restaurant where the seafood is as fresh as it comes. Look out for Bat Island : in the late afternoon scores of bats leave here on their nocturnal hunting trips. Any jeepney or bus going north from Puerto Princesa will take you to Honda Bay. You'll need to get off at Santa Lourdes Wharf (this may involve a tricycle ride from where the bus or jeepney leaves you) and sign in at the little tourist office and book your banca. A boat will cost anything from P200 to P500 depending on which island you plan to visit and for how long. Some islands ask visitors to pay a fee (P20). Accommodation in Honda Bay is limited, but you can always take a sleeping bag and tent. On Starfish Island the Starfish Sandbar Resort has rustic huts that sleep four (P500-800), but remember to bring your own tinned food because the small restaurant often runs out. Meara Marina claims to be the only island resort in Honda Bay without entrance fees. There are cottages ($10-15) on the beach, and you can book in Puerto Princesa at Trattoria Inn.
