Mount Arayat, a 1030-metre extinct volcano in Arayat, rises from the lowlands of Pampanga in solitary and dramatic fashion, the only mountain for miles around. Like many mountains in the superstitious Philippines, Arayat is linked to legends. It is said to be inhabited by Mariang Sinukuan (Maria the Abandoned), the sister of Mariang Makiling (Maria of Makiling). When Mariang Sinukuan comes down from the mountain and visits the lowlands her presence can be felt because the air turns fragrant. Some say there is a place on Arayat's wooded slopes where there are many types of fruit, all of which belong to Maria. You can eat as much fruit as you want, but don't take any away from the mountain because an angry Maria will cause you to lose your way. It takes between seven and nine hours to reach the top of Arayat, making it an easier climb than nearby Pinatubo. If you book with one of the growing number of adventure tour companies in the Clark area they will arrange a guide and transport for you . At the foot of the mountain is Arayat National Park with picnic sheds and swimming pools. To get to Mount Arayat from Clark take a jeepney (45min; P30) from the terminal in Field's Avenue. A taxi will cost about P100.
