MARAWI , on the shores of Lake Lanao, three hours' bus journey southwest of Cagayan de Oro, was renamed the Islamic City of Marawi on April 15, 1980. Ninety-two percent of the people are Muslims and the city is the centre of the Islamic religion in the Philippines. The annual Kalilang festival, April 10-15, is dominated by Koran reading competitions and colourful Muslims singing and dancing. The best place to stay is the Marawi Resort Hotel (tel 063/520 981; $15-20) on the Mindanao State University campus. Also on the campus is the Aga Kahn Museum, which has an interesting collection of indigenous art from Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan. Sacred Mountain is close to the city and gives nice views across Lake Lanao, the second largest in the country. There are daily buses from Cagayan de Oro west along the coast to Iligan (1.5hr; P70). In Iligan you can change for a bus south to Marawi (1hr; P65). The bus station in Iligan is on Roxas Avenue at its junction with Zamora Street.
