The small tadpole-shaped island of Corregidor , which lies in the mouth of Manila Bay and was fought over bitterly during World War II, makes a good day-trip. Sun Cruises (tel 02/813 8140, 524 8140 or 524 0333) organizes day-trips from the Cultural Center of the Philippines pier every morning. You can also stay on the island overnight at the Corregidor Inn, a former Marcos guesthouse, with a nice restaurant and views towards the Bataan Peninsula. A day-trip package costs P1500 per person and overnight packages start at P1745. It's worth making time for a visit to the Malinta tunnels, where General Douglas MacArthur set up temporary headquarters and where vicious hand-to-hand combat took place, a ghostly reminder of the horrors of the war. You can walk on the island's trails, rent mountain bikes or explore the gun batteries. There is also a Japanese cemetery, a museum and a memorial to the thousands who died here.
