Trek To Batad
The strenuous trek from Banaue to the remote little village of BATAD has become something of an obligatory pilgrimage for visitors looking for splendid rural isolation and unforgettable rice-terrace scenery. You'll need to take a jeepney from the market in Banaue for the first 12km before starting a tiring walk up a steep trail. Batad nestles in a natural amphitheatre, close to the glorious Tapplya Waterfall, which is 21m high and has a deep, bracing pool for swimming. Village life in Batad has remained virtually unchanged for centuries, although the development of tourism has seen half a dozen primitive guesthouses spring up to cater for the influx. Rooms in Batad must be among the cheapest on the planet: P35-50 per head. Choose from the Foreigner's Inn, which has a nice balcony restaurant, the wonderful Hillside Inn, with its majestic views, and Simon's Inn, which has a good cosy cafe, serving, of all things, pizza.
