Just about every Nepali has either been to MANAKAMANA (Ma-na- kaa -ma-na) or hopes one day to go. Located on a prominent ridge high above the confluence of the Trisuli and Marsyangdi rivers, the attractive village is home to Nepal's most famous "wish-fulfilling" temple. Each year a half-million people make the journey, and the recent inauguration of cable car service is expected to double that number. The place goes into overdrive on Saturday mornings, when the vast majority of pilgrims come to perform animal sacrifices; the festivals of Dasain (in September-October) and Nag Panchami (in July-August) bring even greater numbers of celebrants. Visiting Manakamana is a very Nepali thing to do, and even if you don't sacrifice an animal you'll feel like you've received an initiation into the society.
