After parting with the Tribhuwan Rajpath at Naubise, the highway descends steadily along the south side of the Mahesh Khola, which soon joins the Trisuli River at Bhaireni, one of several rafting put-in points. Keep an eye out for magnificent, spidery suspension bridges and precarious ropeways spanning the river; you might also spot funeral pyres on the sandy banks, and rafting parties running the rapids. The high-water mark on the rocks shows how much the Trisuli, like all Himalayan rivers, swells and rages during the monsoon. The solid, three-storey farmhouses seen here generally belong to Baahuns and Chhetris, while the humbler mud-and-thatch huts are typical Tamang or Magar dwellings.
