TRISULI BAZAAR (540m) is just 32km from Kathmandu as the crow flies, but 70km - and a good four hours - as the bus crawls. Curled at the bottom of a deep, subtropical (and once malarial) valley, it was put on the map by the construction of the Trisuli River hydroelectric project and flourished for a time as the trailhead for Langtang treks. The development bandwagon has moved on, and nowadays most trekkers don't stop in Trisuli for longer than it takes to swill a bottle of Coke and get back on the bus to Dhunche. Indeed, there's little to see in this ramshackle township, with the possible exception of the old, stair-stepped bazaar (reached through a passage at the west end of the bridge) and a small stupa perched above the opposite bank. That said, staying overnight at Trisuli permits a visit to nearby Nuwakot, which, if you find yourself with an extra day at the end of a trek, is a good deal more enjoyable than killing time in Dhunche or returning to Kathmandu early. Trisuli also makes a good if spartan base for mountain-biking . Rural roads and tracks extend for miles in several directions: east to Nuwakot and beyond, south and then east up the Tadi Khola, west up the lovely Samari Khola towards Gorkha, and north to Dhunche and Somdang (the latter would be a good target in hot weather). The relevant HMG/FINNIDA maps of the area are invaluable in finding promising routes. You can also trek to Gorkha and Pokhara from here, starting up the Samri Khola. Trisuli buses terminate in the main bazaar area on the west side of the bridge, and tickets for onward journeys are purchased there (Sajha services are marginally the fastest to and from Kathmandu). Dhunche-bound buses usually stop in Dhunge, the smaller bazaar on the other side, near the turning for Dhunche. All of Trisuli's accommodation is on the west side of the river: Hotel Ranjit (en suite Rs200-350 [US$3-5]) is as downmarket as the rest, but at least it has rooms overlooking the river.
