Practicalities
Daman lacks the facilities for travellers that other viewpoints such as Nagarkot and Dhulikhel have. For accommodation , there's not much choice, and all of it is expensive for what you get. At the budget end there's Hotel Daman & Lodge (Rs200-350 [US$3-5]), a nightspot-cum-truckstop with a couple of very dark rooms and cold water, and Hotel Sherpa & Hill Side (Rs200-350 [US$3-5]), which is little more than trekking digs. Not much English is spoken in either. At the pricier Daman Mountain Resort (Kathmandu: tel 247485, fax 247914; US$12-20), accommodation is in safari-style tents - as tents go they're cushy, with beds, electricity, kerosene heaters and hot water, though you still have to go outside to use the bathroom. The "resort" also has a few rooms, but they're small and stark. If you really want to go in style, book into the Everest Panorama Resort (Kathmandu: tel 414644, fax 416029), 2.5km above Daman, where you can participate in organized activities ranging from hiking and mountain-biking to fishing and pony-riding. Rooms with central heating are en suite US$75 and over, thatched-hut tents US$20-40. In all likelihood, you'll eat wherever you're staying.
