Completed in 1985, the 110-kilometre-long Jiri road was financed by the Swiss government as part of its integrated development work at Jiri. It breaks off from the Arniko Highway at Khadichaur, 78km from Kathmandu, and immediately starts a merciless 1800m climb out of the Sun Koshi Valley. There's a delightful place to stay in Mude , 28km into the climb and not far from the top: Horse Shoe Mountain Resort (tel 011/63174; en suite US$40-75), run by a former riding instructor to the Crown Prince, has rooms done up in Tamang style and a rusticated dining area. A path leads to a fine viewpoint. The first high point (2540m), reached after 32km, brings views of Phurbi Chyachu and nearby peaks, though they're a bit despoiled by the operations of a soapstone quarry straddling the road. After contouring around two small basins, the road reaches the Newar pitstop of Charikot , just about at its midway point, where there are excellent views of Gauri Shankar and peaks to the east. A road to the left leads 5km to Dolakha , known for its temple to Bhimsen, the patron deity of merchants. From Charikot the main road begins a long descent to the Tama Koshi (835m); downstream from this crossing, an important hydroelectric plant is being built on the Khimti Khola. Then it's another long pull up a rhododendron-forested ridge to the road's highest point (2555m), and finally a dip into the Jiri Valley, at 1900m
