The road to Jiri gives a marvellous foretaste of the immense country that's in store if you're on your way to Everest. It's very narrow and winding, with some unbelievable ups and downs, making it a gruelling bus journey of anywhere from ten to thirteen hours from Kathmandu. On a mountain bike it would be a marathon. On a motorcycle , though, it's an absolute magic-carpet ride - this has to be one of the world's great motorcycle journeys. In the past this route has had a bad reputation for theft from the roofs of buses, but the bus companies seem to have quelled this scam and it's no longer necessary to book an extra seat for your bag. (But still be wary if someone insists on putting your bag on the roof.
