Leaving the Kathmandu Valley through a gap at its eastern edge, Nepal's only road to the Tibet border is officially known as the Arniko Rajmarg ( Arniko Highway ). Constructed by the Chinese in the mid-1960s - to India's great distress - the highway is a busy conduit for lorry-loads of Chinese goods by way of Lhasa, despite frequent blockages by landslides higher up. Appropriately, it's named after the thirteenth-century Nepali architect who led a delegation to Beijing and taught the Chinese how to build pagodas. The first stop along the highway is Banepa , which together with Nala and Panauti once comprised a short-lived independent kingdom east of the Kathmandu Valley. Loads of buses and minibuses ply the Arniko Highway as far as Banepa. However, it's much prettier and less stressful to enter this area by mountain bike or motorcycle from Bhaktapur (entering Nala from the west along a dirt road) or Patan (via Lubhu and the Lakuri Bhanjyang).
