The greenest, most pristine part of the valley is its southeastern edge, where you'll find something now all too rare in Nepal, or at least around the Kathmandu Valley: virgin forest. Once the dominant feature of the middle hills, it has come under increasing pressure in recent years from an exploding population desperate for fuel and farmland. The principal starting point for day trips in this area is Godavari (pronounced Go- daa -vari), home of the Royal Botanical Garden, 10km southeast of Patan. On foot from Godavari you can hike to Phulchoki, the highest point on the valley rim and a full day's outing, or make a more leisurely low-elevation circuit via the curious shrine of Bishanku Narayan. On a mountain bike or motorcycle, you can do either of those, or you can connect up with the Chapagaun route or with another road that reaches the valley's southeastern rim via Lubhu and the Lakuri Bhanjyang. Local buses depart infrequently for the botanical garden from the City Bus Park in Kathmandu. From Patan's Lagankhel bus park, buses go to the St Xavier School in Godavari (hourly) and to Lubhu (also hourly).
