The longest and most varied of the Kathmandu Valley's roads begins at the Ring Road southwest of Kathmandu and ends at the famous sacrificial shrine of Dakshin Kali, a distance of 18km. En route it passes several temples, some beautiful stretches of forest, pleasant rest stops and fine views as it rises more than 300m above the valley floor. Buses and minibuses depart for Dakshin Kali from Kathmandu's City Bus Park roughly every hour, more often on Saturdays (although the latter are appallingly crowded). Kathmandu travel agents offer guided tours on Tuesday and Saturday mornings (about Rs250), or you could hire your own taxi (about Rs800 return to Dakshin Kali for a half day). For real independence, though, go by mountain bike , which takes at least two hours on the outward leg. Traffic eases up after Kirtipur, and is fairly light past the cement plant - except on Saturdays, when the road is busy with sacrificial traffic.
