Museums may seem redundant in Nepal, given the wealth of heritage displayed out in the open. But theft and modernization are forcing a belated move to safeguard national treasures, many of which can be seen in the National Museum , based in an old Rana armoury 1km south of Swayambhu (Mon, Wed, Thurs, Sat & Sun 10.30am-4pm, 3pm in winter; Fri 10.30am-2.30pm; closed Tues; Rs50, Rs50 extra for camera). It's no curatorial coup, and shouldn't be considered a substitute for the valley's countless living exhibits, but you'll come away with a better appreciation of the intertwining of religion, art, myth and history in Nepal.
