Except for the zone from Freak Street across to the GPO (General Post Office), the area south of Durbar Square is relatively untouristed and in parts desperately poor - a fair representation of reality in modern, urban Nepal. The older parts of it are less picturesque and commercial than the quarters north of Durbar Square, but New Road, which bristles and throbs with high-end consumerism, is as lively a street as any in Kathmandu
