An architectural travesty from the 1960s, the creepy new Royal Palace looks like something out of Buck Rogers, with echoes of the Mormon Tabernacle. Built in front of an earlier palace dating from the turn of the century, it was inaugurated in 1970 for King (then Crown Prince) Birendra's wedding. Its Nepali name, Narayanhiti Durbar , refers to a water tap ( hiti) east of the main entrance. Guarded by soldiers, the palace is open to the public only on the tenth day of Dasain, when Nepalis queue up to receive tika from the king and queen.
