The rambling Old Royal Palace (Mon, Wed, Thurs & Sun 10.30am-4pm, 3pm in winter; Fri 10.30am-2pm; closed Tues; Rs250) is usually called Hanuman Dhoka , after its main entrance. Its oldest, eastern wings date from the mid-sixteenth century, but in all likelihood there was a palace on this spot before then. Malla kings built most of the rest by the late seventeenth century, and after capturing Kathmandu in 1768, Prithvi Narayan Shah added (in characteristically martial fashion) four lookout towers at the southeastern corner. Finally, the Ranas left their mark with the garish Neoclassical facade along the southwestern flank. Nepal's royal family last lived here in 1886, before moving to the northern end of town, retaining the complex for ceremonial and administrative purposes. Only a fraction of the five-acre palace and grounds is open to the public
