Immediately north of the Kasthamandap stands yet another Ganesh shrine, the unassuming but ever-popular Maru Ganesh . A ring on Ganesh's bell is usually the first stage in any puja, and this shrine is the first stop for people intending to worship at the other temples of Durbar Square, royalty included. Ganesh's trusty "vehicle", a rat, is perched on a plinth of the Kasthamandap, across the way. The lane heading west from here used to be called Pie Alley - in its heyday in the 1970s it boasted many pie shops, but they've now gone the way of hash shops and hippies. The three-roofed pagoda between the Kasthamandap and the Kumari Chowk is the seventeenth-century Trailokya Mohan, dedicated to Vishnu. A much-photographed statue of the angelic Garud, Vishnu's man-bird vehicle, kneels in his customary palms-together namaste position in front of the temple.
