North of the Trailokya Mohan, the huge seventeenth-century Maju Dewal sits high atop a pyramid of nine stepped levels. Climb to the top for a god's-eye view of the square and all its hubbub, but don't expect to escape the would-be guides, roving bangle-sellers and students anxious to practise their English. From this height you can look straight across at the rectangular Shiva Parbati Mandir , erected in the eighteenth century by one of the early Shah kings. Painted figures of Shiva and his consort Parbati lean out of the first-floor window, looking like they're about to toss the bouquet and dash off to the honeymoon suite. Despite the temple's popular name, the actual objects of worship inside are the Nawa Durga (Nine Durgas). The exterior woodwork is especially fine.
