The infamous Kot Courtyard , which once lay northwest of Durbar Square, is now taken up by a walled police compound. It was here that the Machiavellian general Jang Bahadur Rana engineered a grisly massacre of 55 of the king's top brass in 1846, thereby clearing the way to proclaim himself prime minister and establish the hereditary line that was to rule Nepal until 1951. Blood again flows here each year on the ninth day of Dasain, when soldiers attempt to sever the heads of sacrificial buffaloes with a single sword stroke.
