The part of the Royal Palace facing the Trailokya Mohan is the Gaddi Baithak , a ponderous early-twentieth-century addition that pretty much sums up Rana-era architecture. If you didn't know Nepalese history you might say it had a whiff of the Raj about it, and in a way you'd be right: while India was under British rule, Nepal was labouring under its own home-grown colonialists, the Rana line of isolationist prime ministers. Purists bemoan the Neoclassical building's distorting effect on Durbar Square's proportions, but you've got to admit it adds a bit of spice to the mix. The west-facing balcony once served as the royal reviewing stand. The antiquity of the Durbar Square area was confirmed during the construction of the Gaddi Baithak, when workers uncovered what is believed to be remnants of a Lichhavi-era temple. The find spot is enclosed by a small grate in the middle of the road near the southwest corner of the Gaddi Baithak
