Bicycles
Cycling is still a good way to get to many outlying sights, but Kathmandu's traffic and pollution make it more hazardous and less fun than it used to be. Consequently rental bikes are harder to find, especially in Thamel, where most of the cycle wallahs have been pushed out by redevelopment. Some guest houses have their own bikes for rent, or can arrange them. Old-fashioned one-speed bikes rent for Rs40-75 a day. Mountain bikes , often of disappointing quality, range from Rs60-80 a day for a one-speed model to Rs150-200 for an eighteen-speeder without helmet. Thamel mountain-bike operators may be able to set you up with something better for Rs250-500, including helmet. Shop for bikes early, or even the night before, and bargain for a long-term discount. If riding on the main roads, wear a mask (sold in pharmacies) or a dampened handkerchief. The lane south of the National Theatre, just west of Kantipath, is the place to go to buy a new bike. An Indian-made gear bike will cost you upwards of Rs6000, depending on quality
