It's best not to single out astrologers in the Kathmandu area, partly because few of them speak English, but mostly because they all have their own flocks to look after and it wouldn't be fair to rain hordes of foreign horoscope-seekers down on them. Try offering your innkeeper or a guide a commission to take you to his astrologer and to translate for you - you'll get a fascinating glimpse into an extremely important but behind-the-scenes aspect of Newar life. To have a horoscope prepared you'll need to make an appointment first, and when you go you'll be expected to provide the exact time and place of birth (if you don't know the time, the astrologer may be able to improvise by reading your palm). It'll take the astrologer up to a week to produce an annual chart, even longer for a full span-of-life chart. You'll need to schedule a separate session for him to interpret it for you and answer any questions you may have. The fee for the entire service may run to Rs500 or more. Whatever you may think of astrology or your particular reading, at the least you'll come away with a beautiful and unique work of art.
