Patanjali Yoga Centre (tel 278437, fax 245231; saptayoga@hotmail.com), east of the National Museum in Chhauni, offers classes and residential courses in pure astanga yoga, a balance of the eight traditional yoga systems. Contact the centre for information on short meditation/ hatha yoga sessions, residential study, and month-long yoga programmes based in Pokhara. Also in Chhauni, Shakti Healing Yoga Centre (tel 282856, fax 225184) specializes in hatha and raja yoga under the direction of a female teacher. The centre offers daily morning and evening classes, four- and six-day introductory courses ($60-90) and longer training courses, plus yogic and herbal therapies. The Yoga Studio (tel 417900; chrissieg@wlink.com.np) teaches hatha yoga in the Iyengar method, a gradual path espoused by B.K.S. Iyengar, a key figure in bringing yoga to the West. The resident instructors teach a regular schedule of classes (Rs300 for one and a half hours), as well as one- and two-week intensive courses in season. The studio is located in Tangal, about a ten-minute bike ride east of Thamel, but it's hard to find - call or check posters for directions. Ananda Yoga Centre (tel 311048; Ananda@yoga.wlink.com.np), a nonprofit retreat facility in a lovely setting in the valley 8km west of Kathmandu, caters for both beginners and advanced students of yoga. The centre brings an eclectic approach to hatha yoga, pranayama, meditation, yogic cleansing, diet and naturopathy. The centre does four-day programmes for $75, including room and board. For more information, contact Star Tours & Travels on Tridevi Marg. The only real yoga centre in Thamel, Holistic Yoga Ashrama (tel 419334; PO Box 4783), just south of the Kathmandu Guest House, offers daily morning and afternoon yoga/meditation sessions (Rs150 per hour) and various yogic therapies. Simple accommodation is available here and at another branch near Pashupatinath. The Himalayan Buddhist Meditation Centre also does one-day beginners' workshops on hatha yoga (Rs275).
