Meditation
The Himalayan Buddhist Meditation Centre (tel 221875; hbmc@casnov.attmail.com) conducts regular meditations and introductory dharma teachings, hosts a revolving schedule of day-long workshops and courses on Tibetan Buddhist meditation and related Tibetan arts, and offers three- to five-day meditation courses during the autumn and spring (about Rs1000 per day, including food and lodging). The centre's restful headquarters is located in Kamaladi Ganesthan, behind the Ganesh temple in the street running east from Durbar Marg at the clocktower. HBMC is affiliated with Kopan Monastery, north of Boudha, and another monastery in Pokhara. Nepal Vipassana Centre (tel 250581, fax 224720) runs twelve-day courses on vipassana at its centre in Budhanilkantha. These aren't for the frivolous: daily meditation begins at 4.30am, and silence is kept for the duration. To register or pick up a pamphlet on the course, visit the centre's Kathmandu office (Sun-Fri 10am-5.30pm) in the courtyard of Jyoti Bhawan, behind Nabil Bank on Kantipath. All courses are funded by donations. The Kathmandu Buddhist Centre (PO Box 5336, Kathmandu) holds introductory talks on Western Buddhism a few times a week during the tourist seasons - check notice boards for the location. One-day courses in Buddhism, two-day meditation workshops and longer residential courses are offered. Opportunities also exist for individual study under Tibetan lamas. If you're of the Rajneesh persuasion, you'll be pleased to learn that Kathmandu supports a thriving Osho industry which includes a travel agency, a bimonthly magazine and two meditation centres. The Asheesh Osho Meditation Centre (tel 271385) in Tahachal conducts one-hour dynamic meditation sessions every morning; these are open to all and the fee is a donation. The second venue, Osho Tapoban Forest Retreat Centre (tel 353762; PO Box 278, Kathmandu), located in a beautiful setting north of Nagarjun Ban, hosts occasional retreats as well as daily meditations and discourses, and can provide accommodation (Rs200-350 [US$3-5] / en suite US$8-12) and meals. If you can't get through to the centres themselves, contact Star Tours and Travels on Tridevi Marg (tel 423446; startour@vishnu.ccsl.com.np).
